Domains – Transfer from Another Registrar

  Domains

This article deals with changing the domain registrar, not the owner. If you want to change the owner of a domain, follow the instructions in the article Domains – Change (update) owner. If you want to hand the service over entirely to another person, follow the instructions in the article Services – New owner handover.

Domain Transfers

Transferring a domain means changing the domain registrar, i.e. the company that mediates the domain registration with the administrator of that domain TLD (registry).

Upon transferring the domain, you can change its billing information, because from our point of view you are establishing a new service.

Transferring a domain doesn’t change its DNS servers. If you want to change servers after the transfer is complete, follow the Domains – DNS Server (NSSET) Management guide.

Domain Transfer Conditions

In order to transfer a domain, you must meet certain conditions, usually a transfer fee (which extends the domain registration period) and the entry of an authorization password (AUTH-ID).

CZ Domain Transfer Conditions

You can transfer a CZ domain in any state (including after expiration), with the exception of locked domains. The transfer is free and does not extend the domain registration period.

You can request the AUTH-ID via the transfer form, from any registrar, or directly from the CZ.NIC registry.

SK Domain Transfer Conditions

You can transfer an SK domain in any state (including after expiration), with the exception of locked domains. The transfer is charged and extends the domain registration period by 1 year.

Request the AUTH-ID together with the removal of any locks (if applicable) from your current registration company.

EU Domain Transfer Conditions

You can transfer an EU domain in any state (including after expiration), with the exception of locked domains. The transfer is charged and extends the domain registration period by 1 year.

Request the AUTH-ID together with the removal of any locks (if applicable) from your current registration company, or at the My .eu portal.

PL Domain Transfer Conditions

You can transfer a PL domain in any state (including after expiration) under these conditions:

  • The domain isn’t locked.
  • The domain wasn’t registered or transfered within the last 5 days.

The transfer is free and does not extend the domain registration period, unless the domain is expired; in that case, the transfer is charged and extends the domain registration period by 1 year.

Request the AUTH-ID together with the removal of any locks (if applicable) from your current registration company.

gTLD and nTLD Domain Transfer Conditions

You can transfer a generic (COM, NET, ORG, INFO and BIZ) and new generic (such as NAME, ONLINE, WEBSITE etc.) domain in any state (including after expiration) under these conditions:

  • The domain isn’t locked.
  • The domain wasn’t registered, transfered, or didn’t change owners within the last 60 days.

The transfer is charged and extends the domain registration period by 1 year.

Request the AUTH-ID together with the removal of any locks (if applicable) from your current registration company.

Transfer a single domain

Submit a domain transfer request via the form in the customer administration panel. Access it following these steps:

  1. Log into the customer administration panel.
  2. In the navigation bar, select Domains.
  3. In the menu, click Transfer domain.

In the 1st step of the transfer order form, fill in the domain name you want to transfer, and check whether you wish to set up web hosting for this domain in a follow-up order. The web hosting order is not part of the domain transfer.

In the next step, enter the domain’s AUTH-ID (in case of the CZ domain, you can send it directly to the domain owner’s e-mail here). Complete other settings and continue with the order.

If the transfer form does not offer the possibility to send the domain AUTH-ID, request it from your current registrar.

Sending the domain AUTH-ID directly from the transfer form (only available for CZ domains)

Complete your domain transfer order.

If the transfer is charged, the system immediately sends an invoice to the billing email address. The transfer itself will start immediately after receiving payment.

The typical transfer time is up to 1 hour after meeting all conditions. If the transfer takes longer, check that you have met all the conditions.

CZ Domain Transfer

A CZ domain will transfer within 1 hour of completing the order.

Transferring a CZ domain has no effect on the domain owner’s contact nor its registrar. If you also want to transfer the domain contact, follow the instruction in the article Domains – Contact Transfer.

SK Domain Transfer

When transferring an SK domain, you can assign an existing contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact during the order. The registry does not support contact transfers.

EU Domain Transfer

When transferring an EU domain, you can assign an existing contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact during the order. The registry does not support contact transfers.

PL Domain Transfer

After paying the transfer fee, NASK will send an email requesting confirmation of domain transfer by clicking on a link. Emails from the registry are in Polish and English.

When transferring a PL domain, the system creates a new contact with the original contact’s information, but a different ID. The registry does not support contact transfers.

gTLD or nTLD Domain Transfer

When transferring a generic domain, you can assign an existing contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact during the order. The registry does not support contact transfers.

After paying the transfer fee, WEDOS will send an email requesting confirmation of domain transfer by clicking on a link. The link is valid for 5 days, after which it expires. This e-mail also verifies the domain owner’s email address.

You can re-activate an expired request by entering the domain’s authorization password in the service details. Entering the authorization password again will send a new confirmation email.

The original registrar may or may not send an email approving the transfer:

  • Upon approving the email from the original registrar, the transfer will complete within 1 hour.
  • If you use the email from the original registrar to cancel the transfer, you can re-start it using the above procedure. If you have changed your mind about the transfer, you can use the contact form to cancel the order entirely and ask us to refund the domain extension fee.
  • If the original registrar does not send an e-mail, or if you do not confirm it, the transfer will complete 5 days after the original confirmation.

When transferring a gTLD or nTLD domain, you can assign the domain to an existing contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact in the order. The registries do not support contact transfers.

Bulk domain transfer

To transfer domains in bulk, you need an active credit account with sufficient credit to cover the fees for all transfered domains (prices without VAT).

To access the bulk re-registration interface, follow these steps:

  1. Log into the customer administration panel.
  2. In the navigation bar, select Domains.
  3. In the menu, click Transfer domain.

Enter the domains you want to transfer in the form. Put each domain on its own line. For each domain, you can directly enter its AUTH-ID on the same line. Separate it from the name with a space.

In the next step, enter the authorization passwords of the domains and agree to the conditions of re-registration. Continue with the Continue button.

If all the data is correct, check all the data and the total price of the re-registration for the last time and confirm the order with the Finish button.

You can find information on the general domain transfer procedures in the Transfer a single domain chapter.

Common Issues

The most common issues with domain transfers are:

Domain Already Registered

Issue: There is an error message: This domain is already registered.

Cause: The domain is already registered with WEDOS. If you don’t see it in your customer administration panel, it’s in another user’s account, perhaps the former administrator.

Solution: To move the domain to your customer account, follow the guiide Domains – Move with AUTH-ID.

Error message for domain already registered with WEDOS

No AUTH-ID Email

Issue: There is no e-mail in my inbox that contains the AUTH-ID.

Cause: Most often, the email is sent to a different email address. In some cases, the recipient’s server may flag the email as SPAM.

Solution: Check your SPAM folder. If the message isn’t there, make sure that you’re checking the correct email. If you don’t know the domain owner’s email, ask your current registrar for a hint.

AUTH-ID Error

Issue: The transfer is on hold. There is a message claiming that my AUTH-ID is wrong.

Cause: The AUTH-ID is wrong. The most common mistakes include:

  • typing in the customer ID,
  • typing in the AUTH-ID of a different domain or a domain contact,
  • expired AUTH-ID (one-time, or past time limit),
  • typo or copy-paste error (such as extra spaces or character entities).

Solution: Follow the directions in the message. Check that your AUTH-ID is typed correctly, and not expired.

Long transfer time

Issue: The transfer has been running for several days.

Cause: Most often omission of the confirmation email from your current registrar.

Solution: Check that you have successfully paid for the transfer and confirmed all emails you received regarding the transfer.

Transfered domain doesn’t work

Issue: After re-registration of the domain and establishment of web hosting/WebSite, the domain still points to the previous hosting or has stopped working.

Cause: The transfered domain does not use our DNS servers. The original registrar may have disconnected theirs.

Solution: Change the DNS servers (NSSET) manually according to the instructions in Domains – DNS Server (NSSET) Management.

FAQ

Question: If I transfer an existing domain, do I become the owner?
Answer: The main purpose of a transfer is to change the registrar, not the owner. To change the domain owner, follow the instructions in Domains – Change (update) owner.
