This article deals with domain redirection, i.e. changing the address to another domain. If you want to direct the domain to a certain service, follow the instructions Domains – Direct DNS to Service.
Basic domain redirection does not work with HTTPS. To redirect a domain via HTTPS, follow the instructions Webhosting – Redirect Domain via HTTPS.
In this article, you will learn:
Redirect WWW
You can redirect a domain to another website in two ways, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages:
- Redirection via customer administration panel is very easy to set up, both for the main domain and all subdomains that do not have their own DNS record. However, this redirect does not work with the HTTPS protocol and you can set it only for domains registered with us.
- Redirection via web hosting can work with HTTPS and you can set it for any domain or subdomain. However, to set it up, you need to have an active web hosting service with aliases (NoLimit, NoLimit Extra plans). The setup itself requires editing the files via FTP.
Basic Web Redirection
If the settings are correct, basic website redirection will take effect within 1 hour.
The address to which you redirect the domain must not contain the same domain name; therefore, you cannot redirect to a domain with www or another subdomain in the manner described below.
Also, make sure the address you’re redirecting to doesn’t redirect back to the original domain.
Before you set up redirection in the customer administration panel, make sure that:
- The domain is registered with WEDOS.
- The domain uses our DNS servers.
- No links to this domain contain https://.
Then follow these steps:
- Log into the customer administration panel.
- In the navigation bar, select Domains.
- Select the domain you want to redirect.
- In the left menu, click Redirect Domain.
- In the Redirect WWW section, enter the address you want to redirect to.
- Click the Set button.
To cancel the redirection, direct the domain to a service or edit DNS records manually.
Redirection via Web Hosting
You can find instructions for redirection via web hosting in the article Webhosting – Redirect Domain via HTTPS.
Redirect Emails
Even if you forward the e-mail to another e-mail service provider, we recommend setting the WEDOS SPF record on the domain according to this guide.
Avoid forwarding emails to a mailbox on the domain you are forwarding! If you need to direct all domain emails to one mailbox, set up a catch-all according to the instructions E-mails – Domain, permissions, limits.
You can redirect emails:
- From a domain registered with WEDOS. U této varianty nepotřebujete hosting webu a ni e-mailů, stačí existující e-mailová schránka na jiné doméně. Systém přesměrovává všechny e-maily zasílané na libovolnou adresu (schránku) této domény do určené schránky.
- From a hosting mailbox. Tato varianta přesměrování ovlivní pouze jednu konkrétní schránku, místo celé domény. Návod na nastavení najdete v článku E-maily – Přesměrování schránky.
Redirection via Domain
If the settings are correct, basic email redirection will take effect within 1 hour.
Before you set up the redirect, make sure that:
- The domain is registered with WEDOS.
- The domain uses our DNS servers.
Then follow these steps:
- Log into the customer administration panel.
- In the navigation bar, select Domains.
- Select the domain you want to redirect.
- In the left menu, click Redirect Domain.
- In the Redirect Email section, enter the address you want to redirect to.
- Click the Set button.
To cancel the redirection, direct the domain to a service or edit DNS MX records manually.
Redirection via Mailbox
Set the redirection directly on the mailbox of the Webhosting (incl. WMS), Mailhosting, or WebSite services according to the instructions Emails – Mailboxes.
Common Issues
Common basic domain redirection issues include:
Website Redirection Doesn’t Work
Issue: An error message is displayed instead of the redirected website.
Cause: Most often, this issue is caused entering the address of the original domain with https, which the basic redirection does not support. Some services, including browser address bars, add it to links automatically.
There can also be a redirect conflict or loop where the new domain redirects back to the old one. This situation is commonly characterized by the error message TOO MANY REDIRECTS.
Solution: Make sure you are not entering the redirect domain address with HTTPS. Our redirect server does not support this protocol, so if you need to redirect via HTTPS, follow the instructions Webhosting – Redirect Domain via HTTPS. Also, check that the domain you are redirecting to does not redirect back to the original domain.
Redirected Emails Don’t Arrive
Issue: Redirected emails do not arrive in the destination mailbox.
Cause: Most often, the destination mailbox is set on the very domain you are redirecting, resulting in an infinite loop. In other cases, delivery is prevented by anti-spam mechanisms.
Solution: Check your SPAM folder. If the e-mails are not there either, create an SPF record on the domain, or add WEDOS to an existing SPF record, according to the instructions Emails – Setting up an SPF record. If you receive the error message mail for domain.tld loops back to myself
, make sure that the domain is not sending emails to itself.
