Server Restart Options

We distinguish between 2 restart methods for virtual servers:

  • Soft reset – restarting via the operating system: the operating system terminates and instructs the machine to restart.
  • Hard reset – forced restart (similar to disconnecting the power supply and reconnecting it): used when soft reset is not enough (such as VPS upgrade) or if the operating system doesn’t respond to the soft reset.

The buttons perform the following functions:

  • turn on: turns on a powered off server
  • turn off: forced power off
  • shutdown: sends a request to the operating system via ACPI to shut down (if the operating system on the VPS supports this functionality and has it turned on, it will start to shut down), sometimes it is necessary to send this request multiple times
  • soft reset: reboot via operating system
  • hard reset: forced server restart

Turn Off and Hard Reset disconnect the VNC client.

FAQ

Question: How do I know if I should use a soft or hard reset?
Answer: If a task specifically requires you to perform a hard reset, perform it. Another common use of hard reset is when the operating system does not respond to a soft reset requestje.
