Restore FTP Factory Settings

Restoring FTP to default settings is an irreversible process. Before you do so, we strongly recommend backing up the current data according to the Webhosting – Backups instructions.

You can restore FTP to the basic structure via the WebFTP client (manual).

To manually restore FTP to the basic settings, follow these steps:

  1. Log into FTP with the main FTP account.
  2. In the root directory, delete all files and folders.
  3. Create the following new directories in root: session, tmp and www.
  4. In the www folder, create the domains and subdom folders.
  5. Restore the default .htaccess file.

Common Issues

Mezi běžné problémy s obnovením základní adresářové struktury Webhostingu patří:

Incorrect Root Directory

Issue: The FTP account leads to the www (or other) directory and considers it root.

The www folder marked as root for a secondary FTP account

Cause: All secondary FTP accounts have access only to the www folder or its subfolders. They refer to these as their root directory in WebFTP.

Solution: Consider whether it is enough for you to delete only the website files. If so, delete and restore to default only the contents of the www folder. If not, obtain access to the main FTP account.

Invisible .htaccess File

Issue: The .htaccess file is not displayed in the FTP client.

Cause: .htaccess is a hidden file.

Solution: Enable displaying hidden files in your FTP client, or use WebFTP.

Error 403 Forbidden

Issue: After the reset, Error 403 Forbidden appears on the website.

Cause: You can find detailed information about Error 403 in this article.

Solution: Upload the index.html or index.php file to the www folder or the folder with your domain name in www/domains/ and make sure you have the default .htaccess file uploaded to the www folder. If this does not help, restore the file rights according to the instructions Webhosting – File Management.

New Web Doesn’t Work

Issue: The new site is not uploading files, saving settings, or exhibits other unusual behavior.

Solution: Check that you have really reset the directory structure in the root directory and not in another directory (usually the www directory). The tmp and session folders must be located in the root directory, only .htaccess and website files (or domains and subdom directories) belong to www.

FTP Unavailable or Cannot Delete Files

Issue: I cannot access FTP or delete files.

Solution: Follow the instructions in the FTP – Troubleshooting article.

FAQ

Question: How do I log into FTP?
Answer: You can find detailed instructions for logging into FTP in the article Webhosting – FTP Access. Remember that the only FTP account with access to the root directory is the main FTP account.

Question: How do I know I’m in the right directory?
Answer: The root directory should contain tmp, session and www folders, sometimes backup or logs can be found here. If you see domains, subdom and other folders, you are probably in the www directory.

Question: Do I really have to delete everything? What if I delete something important?
Answer: You don’t have to delete everything, in many cases it is enough to delete the contents of the www folder or the corresponding folder in the www/domains directory. In any case, before restoring FTP to the default settings, we strongly recommend backing up the current data according to the Webhosting – Backups guide. For our part, we cannot guarantee the availability of our backup, especially if requested after some time has passed since the files were deleted.
