This article applies to connection to FTP Webhosting, WMS and WEDOS Disk. If you need to find out the access data to the FTP account or change the password, follow the instructions FTP – Accounts.
In this article, you will learn:
- Which FTP clients to use
- How to solve:
- Frequently asked questions
Recommended FTP Clients
We recommend using the following clients to connect to FTP:
- The WebFTP browser client (manual) is suitable for transferring relatively small (up to tens of MB) files. It also includes a built-in text editor for quick code editing.
- Install the FileZilla client on your computer. We recommend it for transferring larger files.
If you encounter a problem with the FTP client, connect via WebFTP first. If WebFTP works with the given credentials, the error is most likely on the client side.
The WebFTP client currently does not support access to WMS SFTP. Use another FTP client such as FileZilla.
FTP Connection Issues
Before you start troubleshooting FTP, check whether your website is working. If the website displays the Webhosting is disabled error, FTP will not work either.
The most common FTP connection issues include:
- Invalid login credentials
- Omezení FTP účtu
- Nonexistent secondary account root directory
- Connection restirctions
Login Credentials
Enter your login information according to these rules:
- FTP server: XXXXXX.wXX.wedos.net, where X is a numeral.
- Username: wXXXXXX, where X is a numeral (main account), or wXXXXXX_name, where name is the name of an existing secondary FTP account.
- Password: Generated or saved in the customer administration panel at least 15 minutes ago.
You can find the FTP account information in the service or account creation email notification, or in the customer administration panel according to the instructions FTP – Accounts. If you don’t know the password, change it according to the same instructions.
Blocked FTP Account
If the credentials are correct, follow these steps to check whether it is blocked in the customer administration panel:
- Log into the customer administration panel.
- In the navigation bar, select Web & Email Hosting Webhosting or WMS, alternatively Server Hosting WEDOS Disk.
- Select the service for which you want to verify FTP availability.
Display Service Detail of:
In the (FTP) Accounts table, check that the given account does not have a block label (red B). If the account is blocked, unblock it according to the FTP – Accounts instructions.
For WEDOS Disk, click on the magnifying glass icon next to the account and verify that the FTP protocol is checked (enabled).
Root Directory
You can log in to a secondary FTP account (wXXXXXX_name) only if the default directory (path) set for that accoint exists.
The account’s default directory cannot be changed. If it does not exist, create it via the main FTP account, or create a new FTP account in the customer administration panel which accesses an existing directory.
Connection Restrictions
If FTP still refuses to connect even for the main account, check:
- whether the service is restricted or blocked by anti-virus software;
- settings of your firewall and router, whether they block port 21 (22 for WMS);
- whether the connection works from another device on another network (such as mobile data).
If none of the above helps, activate temporary FTP access for support according to the instructions Webhosting – Temporary Support FTP Access. Then contact support. Include the Webhosting name, FTP server address and login name.
File Management Errors
If you encounter errors while working with files, first repair Webhosting file permissions according to this guide. If the errors persist while using a custom FTP client, try the same operation in the WebFTP client first.
File Upload
Slow file upload is usually related to their size or quantity. Upload large files or folders with a lot of files using the FileZilla client. If uploads fail often, upload files in smaller batches.
LowCost Webhosting and WMS hosting have limited space, WEDOS Disk also has limitations on the number of files it can contain. You can find information about the amount and volume of files on Webhosting and Disk in the service details in the customer administration panel.
Display Service Detail of:
If you run out of space or files, you won’t be able to upload more via FTP until you free up space.
File Download
Similar to file uploads, slow file downloads are usually related to their size or quantity. Download large files or folders with a lot of files using the FileZilla client. If downloads often fail, download files in smaller batches.
Deleting Files
Make sure you have important files backed up before deleting anything on FTP.
If the file cannot be deleted, first make sure that it is actually located on the FTP. Update the file listing in the client and verify that no one else is working on the file or directory.
If the file exists and attempts to delete it result in an error, activate temporary FTP support access following this guide and contact us. Include the Webhosting name and a detailed description of the error, or a screenshot with the error message.
