This article addresses sending email from Webhosting aliases. If you want to set an alias (alternative name) of a specific mailbox, follow the instructions Emails – Mailboxes.
In this article, you will learn:
- How alias mailboxes work
- How to send emails from alias mailboxes using identities
- Common issues
- Frequently asked questions
Alias Mailboxes
If you direct multiple domains to a single Webhosting using aliases, all these domains share that Webhosting’s mailboxes. For example, on the Webhosting domain.tld with the alias alias-domain.tld, the info mailbox responds to both info@domain.tld and info@alias-domain.tld.
A variant of an alias mailbox is an alias of a name instead of a domain, for example the mailbox info@domain.tld can have the alias ludo@domain.tld. You set such an alias according to the Emails – Mailboxes guide and it can have an identity just like the domain alias.
Identities only set which address you send mail from. To separate incoming mail, filter it.
Email Identities
Desktop or mobile email clients may also support identity settings. Follow the instructions for the respective software.
To send mail from an alias box or domain, create an identity. To set up an identity in the WebMail client, follow these steps:
- Log into the WebMail client.
- In the upper right corner, click Settings.
- In the left menu, select Identities.
- At the bottom of the Profile section, click the + button.
- Fill in the form and Save.
Make sure to enter the Display Name and Email.
If you check Set Default, the client will prefer this identity over the main mailbox name.
You can also set an automatic signature for the identity in this form.
By setting up an identity, you can choose under which name you will send mail. Choose your identity whenever you compose a new message or reply in the From dropdown.
Common Issues
Common issues with alias identities include:
SMTP Error (553)
Issue: Sending an email causes the error: Unable to add recipient … Sender address Rejected: not owned by user …
Cause: The selected identity is not a valiad alias of the current mailbox.
Solution: Make sure the domain is an alias of the correct Webhosting service, or the mailbox really has the alias set up.
FAQ
Question: I have several companies’ websites on one Webhosting and I want to set up their own info mailbox for each one. How can I achieve this?
Answer: The info mailbox is shared by all alias domains on the web hosting (e.g. info@company1.tld and info@company2.tld). If you want to provide each company with its own mailbox that is not shared by others, try, for example, info-company1, or another unique name for the mailbox whose access you share with the company. This mailbox can still receive messages sent to other alias domains (e.g. info-company1@company2.tld), but only the company with the password for this specific mailbox will have access to it.
