Mailserver Services

Mailhosting, i.e. the space for email boxes and the server ensuring their operation, is part of the Webhosting, WMS and WebSite services (except for the Free plan). We now also offer it as a separate Mailhosting service.

Email Service Restrictions

The following restrictions apply to email services:

  • Email space 5 GB (10 GB for NoLimit Extra), more space as an add-on
  • Maximum size of sent email including attachments: 100 MB
  • Maximum number of emails sent per day: 500 (more information), 50 for LowCost Webhosting
  • Using the SMTP server for sending bulk messages (e.g. newsletters) is forbidden
  • Webhosting aliases share email inboxes (more information)
  • Email services do not include: groupware, calendar, data sharing, synchronization, Instant Messaging, VoIP

Email Setup

If you want to run email only on a domain, you can have all messages going to any domain address redirected to an existing mailbox. In this case, follow the instructions Domains – Basic Redirection.

Follow these steps to activate emails at WEDOS:

  1. Order on of the services: Mailhosting, Webhosting, WMS, or WebSite (except the Free plan).
  2. Make sure you have MX records set up in DNS to match the service type.
  3. After setting up the service, create new mailboxes in the administration panel according to the guide Emails – Mailboxess.
  4. Open the mailbox in the WebMail client, or add it to an email client of your choice.
  5. If you run into problems, follow the instructions Email – Troubleshooting.

Glossary

  • Alias: Another name for a mailbox. 
  • Attachment: A file attached to an email message.
  • Blacklist (Whitelist): A special list of unwanted (or desirable) email addresses that the system always rejects (accepts).
  • Catch-all: A mailbox receiving emails to any non-existent address of the domain.
  • DKIM: A method of securing email communication. For emails sent from our servers, we handle DKIM on our end.
  • DMARC: A DNS record that uses DKIM and SPF to validate email messages.
  • DNSBL: DNS-based BlackList. Type of spam protection based on IP address blacklisting and DNS verification.
  • Email client: A program designed to receive and send emails. Some clients also have additional features such as address book, calendar and others.
  • Filter: An email client rule or set of rules that allows you to automate actions on messages that meet certain them.
  • IMAP: The mail protocol for receiving emails used in mail clients. It typically leaves downloaded messages on the server. It uses ports 993 and 143.
  • mail(): PHP function for sending mail from the web. Include the return-path according to this guide for it to work properly.
  • Mailbox: A specific email address and messages assigned to it.
  • Mailserver: A specialized server for email. Different activities (sending, receiving) are handled by different mail servers.
  • Phishing: Fraudulent emails pretending to be from a different sender than they really are.
  • POP: The mail protocol for receiving emails used in mail clients. It usually deletes downloaded messages from the server. It uses ports 995 and 110.
  • Quota: Maximum number or size of emails.
  • SMTP: The mail protocol for sending emails from the mailbox. It is accessed by both email clients and the web (for example, a contact form). It uses port 587.
  • Spam: Unsolicited emails.
  • SPF: A special DNS record designed to verify servers authorized to send emails from a domain. More information can be found in the instructions for setting up the SPF record.
  • WebMail: Online email client based on RoundCube available at https://webmail.wedos.net.
